Sprout Social alternatives for small business (2026)
Sprout Social's cheapest plan costs $948 a year for one person, and it covers five social profiles. Need a sixth? The next plan that lifts the cap is Professional at $299 per seat per month, which is $3,588 a year before any add-ons. If you're a small business or a solo marketer looking at those numbers, here's what Sprout is actually charging for, where it's worth it, and what the same job costs elsewhere.
All prices below were read from each vendor's own pricing page. Sprout, Buffer and Metricool were checked on October 12, 2026. Where we lean on our 2026 scheduler pricing study (read September 25–26), we say so. Smart Post Studio is on this list, and we've tried to be as plain about our gaps as about anyone else's.
What Sprout Social costs in 2026
Sprout prices per seat, and its pricing page says plans are billed annually, with a 30-day free trial and no card required:
• Essentials: $79 per seat/month billed annually, or $99 billed monthly. Up to 5 social profiles.
• Standard: $199 per seat/month. 5 social profiles, plus the consolidated inbox, keyword and location monitoring, and review management.
• Professional: $299 per seat/month. Unlimited profiles, message tagging, and competitor, tag and paid insights.
• Advanced: $399 per seat/month. Adds the Sprout API, helpdesk integrations and sentiment.
• Listening and Premium Analytics are separate add-ons, and the page doesn't list a price for them.
The thing to notice is the profile cap. Essentials and Standard both stop at five. A small business on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and X is already at six, and on Sprout that's a Professional seat.
Where Sprout is worth the money
We'd rather you didn't switch away from Sprout for the wrong reasons, so here is what you'd be giving up. Sprout isn't a scheduler with extras. It's a customer-care and reporting suite that also schedules.
The inbox. Comments, messages and reviews from every network in one place, with tagging and team assignment on the higher plans. If your day is mostly replying rather than posting, this is what you're paying for, and the cheaper tools below are schedulers first.
Reporting and listening. Competitor and paid reports on Professional, sentiment on Advanced, and a listening add-on that tracks conversations you're not tagged in. That's built for someone who has to prove ROI to a boss.
Teams and compliance. Seats built around a team, review management from Standard up, and the Sprout API plus helpdesk integrations on Advanced. If three people touch your accounts and they need to work from the same queue and inbox, Sprout is built for exactly that.
If two of those three describe you, stay. The rest of this post is for the much larger group who mostly need posts to go out on time, on every platform, without a four-figure bill.
The alternatives, priced for the same small-business job
Same job for each one: one person, six to eight platforms, monthly billing unless noted.
Buffer: the closest "simple and reputable" swap
Buffer's Essentials plan is $6 per channel per month on monthly billing, or $5 on yearly. Eight channels is $48 a month, or $40 on yearly billing, with one user and unlimited scheduled posts under a fair-use cap. Its free plan covers 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts each. Buffer also has a comment inbox and an AI assistant on every plan, and lists Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor integrations even on the free tier. Where it costs more: the per-channel model means the bill grows every time you add a platform, and team features (approvals, access controls) sit on the Team plan at $12 per channel. Our full head-to-head is at Smart Post Studio vs Buffer.
Metricool: the closest thing to Sprout's analytics on a budget
Metricool Starter is $25 a month billed monthly ($20 annual) for up to 5 brands, and each brand can hold one profile per network. The catch is X: it's a $10 per month add-on per connected account on every paid plan, and the free plan excludes both X and LinkedIn. Team members, approvals and the API (with Zapier and Make) start on Advanced at $67 monthly ($53 annual). If Sprout's reports are what you'd miss most, Metricool is where we'd look first. More detail in Smart Post Studio vs Metricool.
Hootsuite: if you want a suite, just a cheaper one
Hootsuite's plans page starts at $99 per user per month, billed annually. That's still a lot for one person, but it's the most Sprout-like in shape, with an inbox, team features and reporting in one product. We covered who it suits in Hootsuite alternatives for solo creators.
Later, SocialPilot and SocialBee
From our September pricing study: Later Starter came to $25 a month for one "social set" with posts capped at 30 per profile per month; SocialPilot to $32 a month for 8 accounts; SocialBee to $49 a month, because 8 profiles pushes you into its 10-profile tier. All three were trial-only, with no free plan. They're worth a look if Instagram planning (Later) or evergreen content recycling (SocialBee) is your main job.
Smart Post Studio: if posting reliably is the whole job
Our Scheduler plan is $8 a month flat for all 8 platforms we support: Instagram, Threads, TikTok, X, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn (including Company Pages) and Fanvue. It includes the desktop app, the web app (beta) and MCP access, so you can schedule from Claude or another AI assistant. Studio plans from $11 a month add our AI Writing Studio. There's a free plan with 2 platforms and 10 posts a month, no card, with a small attribution line on posts. Video goes up at full original quality (here's why that matters), and email campaigns are included on paid plans, which is unusual in this category (details).
Where we lose to Sprout, plainly: no Pinterest, no social listening, no competitor reports, and team seats are still on a waitlist rather than live. If any of those is a requirement, we're not your Sprout replacement.

How to choose in five minutes
Count your profiles honestly. If it's six or more, Sprout's realistic price is Professional, not Essentials.
Decide whether you reply or publish. A team that lives in the inbox should compare Sprout with Hootsuite and Buffer's community features. Someone who mostly publishes should compare on price per platform and video quality.
Check the X line. As Metricool shows, "all networks" sometimes means "all networks, plus a surcharge".
Run a real week in a trial. Every tool here has a free plan or a trial. Schedule the posts you'd actually publish, including a video, and see what comes out the other end. Our free video checker will tell you whether a file meets each platform's specs before you upload it.
TL;DR: Sprout Social starts at $79 per seat/month billed annually, but its first two plans cap you at five profiles, so a six-platform small business is realistically looking at $299 per seat/month. It's worth that if you need its inbox, listening, reporting and approvals. If you mostly need posts published, Buffer ($48/month for 8 channels), Metricool ($25/month plus $10 for X) and Smart Post Studio ($8/month flat for 8 platforms) do the scheduling for a fraction of the cost, each with its own trade-offs.
Run the system without the busywork.
Smart Post Studio schedules a week of posts across all eight platforms from your Mac or PC — or straight from the cloud. 14-day free trial, from $8/month.
