A free scheduler with full video quality — catch included
"Free social media scheduler" is a search where every result is selling something — including this one. We make Smart Post Studio, and since August it has a free plan, which makes us part of the category we spent July warning you about. So here's the deal, stated up front: this post walks through what free tiers actually limit — channels, volume, features, and the quiet one, output quality — and then lays out our own free plan with the fine print in full, including the line of text that pays for it.
Every free plan is a funnel. The question is what it degrades.
A commercial free tier exists to convert you to a paid plan. That's not a scandal — we said the same thing in our July roundup of free schedulers, back when we didn't have one and could say it from the sidelines. The funnel itself is fine. What matters is where each vendor puts the squeeze, because the squeeze always lands on something — and the something varies more than the pricing pages let on. There are four usual places.
1. Channels and platforms
The most visible cap. Buffer's free plan allows up to 3 channels — and, to its credit, X is one of the options. Metricool's free plan is 1 brand with one profile per network, with LinkedIn excluded from free entirely and X available only as a paid add-on. The pattern: the platforms that cost the vendor the most in API fees are the first ones gated. Before you commit to any free tier, check that your two or three platforms are actually on it — the roundups usually don't mention which ones aren't.
2. Volume — and the shape of the cap matters more than the number
Two caps that both say "10" or "20" can behave completely differently. Buffer's free limit is 10 scheduled posts per channel, refillable — it caps how many posts can sit in the queue at once, not how many you publish in a month. Post daily and refill the queue, and you can publish far more than ten a month; what you can't do is batch a month ahead. Metricool's free limit is the opposite shape: 20 published posts per calendar month, hard, resetting on the 1st. One cap kills batching, the other kills frequency. Neither pricing page leads with which shape you're getting, and the shape is the thing that decides whether the plan fits your week.
3. Features — analytics, AI, exports
The middle squeeze. Metricool's free analytics carry a literal watermark and 30 days of history, AI is 5 credits a month, and report downloads are paid-only. Buffer's free insights also stop at 30 days of history, with reports and custom UTMs on paid. This is the most honest squeeze of the four, frankly — analytics depth is a reasonable thing to charge for, and it doesn't touch your published output. If a free tier has to limit something, this is where you want it limited.
4. Output quality — the quiet one
Here's the squeeze nobody puts in the comparison table: what the tool does to your video. Buffer's own help documentation puts its ceiling at 1080p, with larger files downscaled during processing — and that's not a free-tier limit, it's the architecture. Upgrading doesn't buy your resolution back. Every cloud scheduler that transcodes on free transcodes on paid too, because the re-encode is baked into the pipeline, not the price list. Watermarks stamped on your media are rarer in this category than people expect — we went looking for them in July — but degraded output is the quieter version of the same problem: the free tool leaves a mark on your work, just one you can't see until you compare files.
Ours, fine print first
Smart Post Studio's free plan, complete, with nothing saved for the pricing page:
📋 The free plan, one box
→ 2 platforms — your pick of the 8 (Instagram, Threads, TikTok, X, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Fanvue)
→ 10 scheduled posts a month (up to 5 a day) · schedule up to 30 days ahead
→ Full original video quality — 4K stays 4K. Same publishing pipeline as paid
→ Runs in the web app — posts fire with your computer off
→ No card, no expiry. Every 14-day trial continues onto the free plan automatically
→ Each free post carries a small "scheduled with smartpoststudio.com" line — removed on any paid plan
→ AI Writing Studio and MCP are not included on free
Read that against the four squeezes above. Channels: capped at 2, but you choose which 2, and nothing on the list is gated behind paid — X and LinkedIn included, which is not the norm. Volume: capped at 10 a month, Metricool-shaped, so this is a plan for a consistent poster, not a high-frequency one. Features: the AI tools are paid-only. Quality: not squeezed at all. Free video goes through the identical pipeline as paid video — no transcode, no resolution tier, no "upgrade for HD." That was the one line we refused to cross, because degrading the output punishes the work itself, and the work was never the thing that should pay for a free plan.
The footer is the business model
So what does pay for it? The line. Every post published from the free plan carries a small "scheduled with smartpoststudio.com" at the end of the caption. It's text — not a watermark burned into your video, not a logo on your image — and the composer accounts for it against each platform's character limit, so a post never fails because of it. Any paid plan removes it, and paid starts at $8/month for the Scheduler plan — all 8 platforms, unlimited scheduling, bring your own AI over MCP.
We're saying this plainly because it's the honest version of what every free tier does. Buffer's funnel is the queue you outgrow. Metricool's is the monthly cap and the watermarked analytics. Ours is a line of attribution: your posts do a small amount of marketing for us, and in exchange you get the full-quality pipeline free, forever, with no card. If that trade reads as fair to you, take it. If it doesn't, one of the other free tiers may squeeze somewhere you mind less — genuinely, pick by where you can afford the squeeze.
What changed since July
In the July roundup we wrote a section titled "Why we don't have a free plan." Six weeks later we shipped one, so that section is now a fossil, and you're owed the short version of the reversal: we stopped believing that a trial with a deadline was the honest alternative. Trials end in dead accounts; a free plan ends in a user who's still posting. The attribution line is what made the math work without per-upsell nagging. There's a full build-journey post on the change coming — including what happened to every trial account that had already expired.
Free schedulers — quick answers
Is there a free scheduler that keeps 4K video at 4K?
The platforms' own native schedulers, always — uploads go straight to the platform. Among third-party tools, cloud schedulers transcode as a rule (Buffer documents a 1080p ceiling on every plan). Smart Post Studio's free plan publishes at full original quality — the same pipeline as paid.
Does the free plan expire or need a card?
No and no. Every account starts as a full 14-day trial of everything, then continues onto the free plan automatically — no card at any point, no expiry. Details on the pricing page, or start in the browser.
What exactly appears on free posts?
A single line — "scheduled with smartpoststudio.com" — at the end of the caption, added at publish time and sized against each platform's character limit so it never causes a failure. It's removed on any paid plan, from $8/month.
TL;DR: Free scheduler tiers squeeze in four places — channels, volume, features, and output quality — and the quality squeeze is the one that doesn't show up in comparison tables. Our free plan caps volume (2 platforms of 8, 10 posts a month, 30 days ahead) and gates the AI, but publishes at full original quality — 4K stays 4K, same as paid. The catch is one line of caption text that pays for it, removed on any paid plan from $8/month. Every trial now ends in a free plan, not a dead account.
