Both Buffer and Smart Post Studio now run the same honest pattern: sign up, trial the paid features, and if you never enter a card the account lands on a free plan instead of dying. We make one of the two products, so treat this comparison with that bias in mind — and to keep it fair, every Buffer number below comes from Buffer's own pricing page, checked the week this was published. Where we couldn't verify something from their published pages, we say so instead of guessing.

The two caps have different shapes — this is the whole comparison

Buffer's free plan: up to 3 channels, 10 scheduled posts per channel, refillable anytime. That "refillable" is the load-bearing word. The 10-post limit caps how many posts can wait in the queue at once per channel — the moment one publishes, the slot frees. Post daily and top up the queue, and there is no monthly ceiling on how much you publish; Buffer's own page spells this out. What the cap actually prevents is batching far ahead: you can never have more than 10 posts lined up per channel.

Smart Post Studio's free plan: 2 platforms (your pick of the 8), 10 scheduled posts per month, up to 5 a day, schedulable up to 30 days ahead. Our cap is monthly volume, full stop. You can batch all 10 in one sitting and spread them across the month — the shape favors the planner — but when the 10 are used, that's the month.

So before any feature table: if you post most days, Buffer's free plan holds far more monthly volume than ours. If you post a couple of times a week and want to batch a month in one sitting, ours fits the way you work and Buffer's queue depth fights it. Volume, if you post frequently. Covered above, but it deserves the top slot: a daily poster on 2–3 channels publishes 60–90 posts a month on Buffer free. Ours allows 10. That's not close.

One more channel. Three channels versus our two. If you're active on exactly three platforms, Buffer covers them and we make you drop one.

Nothing appended to your posts. Buffer's free plan adds no branding to what you publish. Every post from our free plan carries a one-line "scheduled with smartpoststudio.com" in the caption. If any attribution on your posts is a dealbreaker, Buffer wins this outright — more on the line below.

AI included on free. Buffer lists its AI Assistant, with unlimited use, on the free plan. Our AI Writing Studio is paid-only (Studio plans, from $11/month) — free-plan users write their own captions or bring a separate tool.

Analytics and the extras. Buffer free ships 30-day insights history, a community inbox for replies, 100 saved ideas, and API access (1 key, 3,000 requests/month). Our free plan is a scheduler, not a suite — we don't match any of that on free.

No advance-window ceiling. A Buffer queue slot can hold a post dated months out; our free plan schedules at most 30 days ahead.

Platforms we don't have. Buffer connects Bluesky, Pinterest, Google Business Profiles, and Mastodon, none of which Smart Post Studio supports. If one of those is core to you, this comparison is already over.

Video quality — the structural one. Buffer's help documentation puts its video ceiling at 1080p, with larger uploads downscaled during processing — and that's the pipeline on every plan, not a free-tier restriction. Smart Post Studio's free plan publishes at full original quality: 4K in, 4K out, the identical pipeline paid users get. Fanvue. We're one of the few schedulers with a real Fanvue API integration; Buffer doesn't list Fanvue as a channel at all. For Fanvue creators the free plan choice makes itself.

The upgrade math, when free stops fitting. This one is about the door each free plan opens onto. Buffer's paid Essentials runs $6 per channel per month — three channels is $18/month, six is about $36. It's caption text — not a watermark on your media — added at publish time and counted against each platform's character limit so it never causes a post to fail. Any paid plan removes it, starting at $8/month. Buffer funds its free tier differently: the queue ceiling and the per-channel meter are the funnel. How to actually pick

Pick Buffer free if: you post most days; you need exactly three channels; any attribution on your posts is unacceptable; you want AI drafting, an inbox, and analytics without paying; or you live on Bluesky, Pinterest, Google Business, or Mastodon. In those cases Buffer's free plan is simply the better product, and we'd rather you use it than resent ours.

Pick Smart Post Studio free if: you publish video you edited in 4K and want it to arrive that way; you're a Fanvue creator; ten well-planned posts a month covers your volume; or you can see yourself outgrowing free and would rather land on $8 flat than $6-per-channel.
